Santa Fe, NM – Daniel Cooney Fine Art is proud to present “The Forest Has 1,000 Eyes,” the first solo exhibition of new works by celebrated artist Dietmar Busse. The show will run from September 20 through November 1, 2025, with an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, September 20, from 5 to 7 pm.
This exhibition features a series of unique chemical paintings created on gelatin silver photographic paper. Drawing inspiration from the artist’s childhood on a rural farm in Germany during the 1960s and 70s, the works blend darkroom chemicals, dyes, colored pencil, and Busse’s distinct drawing style. The works evoke a mysterious world with human figures, ravens, crows, and animals both domestic and wild, woven into complex compositions. The artist’s stylistic technique recalls ancient petroglyphs found in the American Southwest, balancing themes of both apprehension and joy.
Busse’s images are archetypal and autobiographical, he imbues photography’s truth telling potential with feverish emotional transparency. A storyteller at heart, Busse engages his own family narrative to explore universal truths. “The Forest Has 1,000 Eyes” is a deeply personal exploration of memory and myth. Through this new body of work, viewers are invited to step into a world where childhood stories and the natural world intertwine in unexpected ways.
Born in 1966 in Stalzenau, Germany, Busse has lived and worked in New York City since 1991. His recent exhibition, "Dietmar Busse, Fairy Tales 1991-1999", at Amant in Brooklyn, earned critical acclaim in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Guardian, and other prominent publications. Busse’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum Schloss Moyland in Germany, Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam, and the Leslie Lohman Museum in New York. His art has also appeared in The New Yorker, TIME, and The New York Times Magazine.
